Mayor Bloomberg, in proposing congestion pricing for Manhattan’s business district, is using the argument that his initiative, by reducing air pollution, will cut the rate of asthma in our children. Sounds good, but the problem is that there is no science behind Dr. Bloomberg’s latest prescription.

The mayor writes, “Improving air quality is important to all New Yorkers because in many parts of our city, air pollution is contributing to an increased rate of asthma-related hospitalizations. In fact, in areas like the South Bronx, parts of Brooklyn, and Northern Manhattan — children are hospitalized for asthma at four times the national rate.” (more…)

Last month, as the world marked Africa Malaria Day, a massive international campaign was mounted to fight the disease by donating mosquito nets to be placed around the beds of African children. Of course nets may protect the children some of the time, but malaria will take the lives of about two million in Africa each year.

In the developed world, we have largely eradicated malaria, largely because of a massive spraying effort that took place in the mid-20th century. The insecticide that was, and is, so effective at killing the mosquitoes that carry the disease is DDT. (more…)

There is a war going on, and New York is, once again, the front line. I’m referring not to the war on terror, but rather to the war on your right to decide for yourself what you eat.

The enemy here is not lurking in Afghanistan but right here in New York’s City Hall. The question is whether we will allow our mayor and City Council to do more damage to our freedom and our city’s economy that even Al Qaeda managed on September 11, 2001. (more…)
